Aged Habanos

Das FT «Ho to spend it»-Magazin berichtete im Februar darüber:

At first the cynic in me saw a way of getting rid of stock that had been lying around for some time, but then I tasted one – a Churchill-sized 1998 Romeo y Julieta Prince of Wales. A Romeo y Julieta in this format is a Cuban standard but the decade or so of ageing in the box had worked a miracle, transforming a familiar, reliable Cuban into a cigar of refinement and if not delicacy, then an unusual smoothness. Although I was tasting other, newer, cigars at the time, I kept coming back to the Romeo, hypothised by its fragrant bouquet, easy draw and pale, even ash. I was intrigued.

However, one of the problems with Havana cigars from the late 1990s was that the quality was uneven. Once again, these problems have abated and in a stroke of genius, Jemma Freeman, owner of Hunters & Frankau, called in two of Cuba’s leading quality control experts to check each cigar being offered for sale: it took three months, but it was worth it. Furthermore, each vintage cigar carries a handsome embossed gold band giving its year, and every box is stamped with the word «Revisado», to indicate that it meets current Cuban standards.
