Heute enthüllt das Magazin Cigar Aficionado die Cigar of the Year 2013. Die Plätze 2-10 der Rangliste sind bereits bekannt. Mit der Cohiba Behike 54 auf Platz 5 hat es bis jetzt nur eine Havanna in die Top 10 geschafft. Platz 3 wurde an die Davidoff Nicaragua vergeben – das erste Mal seit langem, dass Davidoff Eingang gefunden hat in diese amerikanisch geprägte erlauchte Liste, die den topplatzierten Marken satte Umsatzgewinne verspricht. Noch bevor der Gewinner für dieses Jahr feststeht, hat Cigar Aficionado im «Cigar Insider» auf die diesjährigen Ratings zurückgeschaut. Die höchste Bewertung aller Zigarren bekam demnach die kubanische Punch Serie d’Oro No. 2 Edición Limitada 2013 mit 94 Punkten. Ob die Punch auch zuoberst auf dem «Cigar of the Year»-Treppchen gelandet ist – wir erfahren es heute.

The overachievers of 2013 represent Cuba, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, but the real standout was unquestionably the Punch Serie d’Oro No. 2 Edición Limitada 2013 from Cuba. It was the only cigar to score 94 points in Cigar Insider this year and is part of Habanos S.A.’s limited-edition program, which takes Cuba’s conventional brands and releases them in unconventional sizes. Wrappers on Edición Limitadas are also significantly darker than those found on regular-production cigars. As is typical for the program, three Edición Limitadas came out this year, but none left nearly the impression that the Punch did. The Serie d’Oro marks the first time that the Punch brand has been part of the campaign. Traditionally, Cuba’s flagship global brands dominate the Edición Limitadas, but occasionally, Cuba elects a smaller brand to be part of the release. This year, Punch got its turn with this belicoso-sized cigar.
